Biocontamination

Biocontamination:
Treat your business premises with Photoclean

Contamination by microorganisms, or biocontamination, occurs in enclosed spaces and poses a problem that requires an appropriate solution for businesses across various sectors.

Their proliferation can indeed affect product quality, as well as the health of employees and consumers.

Photoclean, a specialist in UV air decontamination, explains how contamination occurs, the main contaminants faced by the food industry, medical sector, and service sector, and the benefits of our solution for effectively combating air contamination, regardless of the size of your facilities.

What is biological contamination?

Biological contamination refers to the presence of an undesirable biological organism (bacteria, yeast, mold, viruses, etc.) within a closed environment, on or inside a product. These organisms may be present in the air, attach to surfaces, or circulate in water.

These are primarily microorganisms divided into three main categories (viruses, bacteria, and yeasts and molds), as well as toxins—often foul-smelling—produced by these microorganisms, which feed on chemical compounds (VOCs) present in dust or adhering to surfaces.

This microbial interaction between biological and chemical elements means that both types of contamination must be addressed to ensure effective decontamination of the premises.

What risks do facilities in the various sectors face?

Contamination, particularly airborne contamination affects production facilities as well as laboratories, healthcare facilities, and retail stores and offices in the service sector.

Depending on the nature of their operations, businesses may be more exposed to certain types of contaminants and health risks.

The food industry, for example, is highly susceptible to microbiological contamination of food, which can alter not only the appearance but also the taste and freshness of products.

In a bakery, for example, the cooling phase is prone to fungal contamination due to the dough’s water content. For this reason, effective air treatment is essential.

Similarly, meat and deli meats can be contaminated with mold or pathogenic microorganisms that pose a health risk, such as Listeria, Salmonella, or E. coli.

This is also true for cheese factories and dairies, since dairy products are susceptible to biological contaminants in the air, which can multiply in the environment and alter the appearance, taste, smell, or texture of the products.

The wine industry, on the other hand, will be more significantly affected by anisoles, which cause odor problems and taste alterations such as cork taint. These anisoles are caused by the methylation (transformation) of phenols present in the air by molds. Mold can also damage facilities and barrels or disrupt climate control systems, leading to temperature control issues or simply excessive energy consumption.

Fine particulate matter and the spread of viruses in the service sector will, in turn, have an impact on employees’ health (allergies, illnesses) and, consequently, on the company’s productivity, while nosocomial infections in hospitals—which are directly linked to airborne contaminants—can endanger patients’ lives.

Photoclean: An Effective Solution for Combating Contamination by Microorganisms and Chemical Compounds

Experience

Founded in 2005 by two experts in industrial air treatment, Photoclean is currently the only service provider in France offering businesses a customized solution to effectively treat and decontaminate the air in their facilities, including very large volumes of tens of thousands of cubic meters, as is often the case with factory disinfection.

Optimization

Our industrial UV disinfection system is based on the principle of photolysis, a natural reaction triggered by exposure to UV-C rays (whose decontaminating power has been known for a century). To enable the continuous treatment of large volumes with minimal pressure drop and virtually no dead zones, we have developed a specialized media that is placed in direct contact with the lamps inside our decontamination modules.

Compatibility

Our product line allows us to adapt to your facilities without having to make significant modifications: our universal modules are compatible with all air handling units and air treatment systems, and we can also provide you with standalone modules and high-efficiency, energy-efficient air handling units.

Effectiveness

In addition to its cost-effectiveness, our technology has the advantage of eliminating all microbiological and chemical contaminants with an efficiency of over 95%.

Comprehensive Solution

Above all, we provide you with a comprehensive solution specifically designed for your facilities and tailored to your business to combat microbiological contamination. We conduct a thorough on-site audit to ensure that our recommendations and the installation of the equipment are tailored not only to the layout and aesthetics of your facilities but also to the contamination levels that need to be controlled.

Optimal Disinfection

We can also develop an air extraction and replacement solution—including for commercial buildings—to help you ensure proper ventilation of your premises by supplying decontaminated air. This way, you can benefit from optimal disinfection of your business during the coronavirus pandemic.
