UV disinfection lamp for air disinfection:
Discover our custom solution for your facilities

With nearly 20 years of expertise in microbiological and chemical air decontamination, PhotoClean has developed an innovative technology to offer companies in the food industry, wine industry, pharmaceutical sector, and service sector a customized solution with proven effectiveness.

The use of UV disinfection lamps offers numerous advantages. However, only UVC lamps are effective, yet the technical constraints associated with them made their use in air treatment technically difficult, if not impossible.

For this reason, Photoclean has adapted this technology to offer you units that will easily integrate into your facilities and your air handling units. Most importantly, our team conducts a comprehensive on-site audit to precisely identify your challenges and provide you with a customized solution for effective air decontamination.

PhotoClean: An effective UV disinfection system suitable for all types of facilities

UV-C UV-C disinfection is based on the principle of photolysis: the chemical reaction induced by UV radiation oxidizes bacteria and microorganisms, thereby eliminating them.

This method has long been used for water treatment, but until recently it was rarely used to disinfect the air. The reason?

To be effective against microorganisms circulating in the air, the entire volume of air in the room must come into contact with the UV lamp several times per hour and remain there long enough for the microorganisms to be eliminated.

However, the wavelength of UV light is very short: the effectiveness of UV-C rays is concentrated within a few centimeters of the lamp. Therefore, air must pass through the air treatment units quickly enough to treat large volumes of air, but the contaminants must remain in contact with the UV rays long enough for effective air decontamination. This was technically very complicated, if not impossible, and in any case required enormous machines that consumed a great deal of energy. Because it was both cumbersome and costly, this solution was therefore usually ruled out by companies.

After many years of developing air handling units, the experts at PhotoClean have developed an innovative UV disinfection system that uses UV disinfection lamps to disinfect the air regardless of the size or layout of the premises, while keeping energy consumption under control.

The secret? Our technology is based on a combination of germicidal UV lamps and a specialized filter medium installed in close proximity to the lamps. The UV radiation penetrates the fiber, scatters, and triggers a natural chemical reaction that oxidizes the contaminants—and thus eliminates them.

A revolutionary filter medium created and manufactured by PhotoClean

PhotoClean developed the media used in the air treatment modules we offer and is currently the only company in the world to manufacture it. Made from specialized fibers and produced exclusively in the Lyon region, this product, combined with UV disinfection lamps for professional use, provides an innovative and cost-effective solution for everyone, as our modules can be integrated into any room as well as into any air handling system or air handling unit, with no flow rate limitations.

The presence of the media is essential because it acts as a filter for viable particles and chemicals, thereby facilitating adsorption. In other words, microorganisms or VOCs will attach themselves to its surface and, once trapped there, can be eliminated by UV rays.

Our specialized fiber acts as a semiconductor, enabling it to efficiently transmit UV waves. Just 1 m² of this media thus provides a surface area of 4,000 m² for heat exchange. As a result, the challenges posed by wavelength and exposure time are no longer an issue.

UV disinfection offers numerous advantages: not only does the use of this medium in combination with germicidal UV-C lamps is effective against bacteria, mold, viruses, and VOCs (volatile organic compounds found in gaseous form in the air)—all of which are continuously destroyed—but the pressure drop is very low, allowing you to treat all sensitive areas of your facilities without releasing chemicals into the air.

Perfectly suited for treating very large volumes of air (food industry, pharmaceutical industries, etc.), our systems are also beneficial for service sector businesses seeking to combat COVID-19 within their facilities, since the UV-C rays from the germicidal lamps effectively eliminate the virus in the air and prevent its replication—all without requiring occupants to leave the premises, unlike techniques such as misting and fumigation, which primarily treat surfaces, or even ozone.
