What are UV-C rays, and how do they work to decontaminate?
When we talk about UV disinfection lamps, we’re usually referring to devices with a limited range, since UV-C rays can only travel 5 to 10 cm around the device. To address this issue, Photoclean has come up with an innovative solution.
But let’s start at the beginning: what are UV-C rays, and why are they germicidal?
Ultraviolet rays are electromagnetic waves of the same nature as light. The human eye perceives a light spectrum corresponding to the colors of the rainbow. Ultraviolet rays are so named because they lie “beyond violet” as we perceive it.
In nature, they account for 5% of the sun’s rays that reach us, but they can be artificially reproduced for specific purposes.
Among the different types of UV rays (UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C), only UV-C rays are germicidal. They
are very powerful. Fortunately, they are completely absorbed by the ozone layer and never reach the Earth’s surface. This is why they are artificially generated to eliminate bacteria.
Their electromagnetic wavelength is known to be very short, which makes them very powerful but can pose a technical challenge for air treatment, which often involves treating large areas. For this reason, UV-C has long been used for water treatment, but not for air (or at least not effectively).
PhotoClean: a combination of germicidal UV lamps and a specialized filter medium
The Photoclean line of air decontamination units and modules is based on a technological innovation: the combination of UV disinfection lamps and a specialized filter medium developed and manufactured exclusively by Photoclean at its facilities in Lyon.
This device, placed in close proximity to the lamps, distributes UV-C rays over a very large area (4,000 times more effective than a conventional device) and traps contaminants long enough to eliminate them. This solves the problem of the short wavelength!
Most importantly, the Photoclean decontamination system directly targets chemical and microbiological contaminants—eliminating them by also eradicating their ability to replicate—rather than inert particles, which are a thousand times more numerous.
As a result, Photoclean units operate continuously and cause minimal pressure drop. Reasonably sized and energy-efficient, they help save money and can treat all types of spaces, including very large areas such as factories and production facilities.
Our product line includes freestanding units—both fixed and mobile—as well as modules that can be adapted to any air handling unit for easy installation.
When you contact us, our engineering team will visit your site to conduct a comprehensive audit of your facilities. We will then provide you with cost-estimated recommendations that address the issues identified to meet the needs of your business.
Once we receive your approval, we manufacture your custom UV air decontamination units in our workshops in the Lyon region. We also provide you with a layout plan for quick and easy installation by your technical department, and we can assist them as needed.
Fully self-contained, our units require only annual maintenance and deliver optimal performance every day, around the clock.
