Ozone Decontamination for Air and Surfaces

Ozone cleaning and decontamination processes can be used to treat surfaces, equipment, and the ambient air. What are the characteristics of this gas? How does the disinfection process work? What other solutions are available for sanitizing commercial spaces? Photoclean has all the answers.

What is ozone, and what are its properties?

Ozone is a gas composed of three oxygen atoms. It occurs naturally in the atmosphere and protects the Earth from the sun’s UV rays. Its microbicidal and deodorizing properties—
—make it a valuable ally for disinfecting water, air, and surfaces.

How does ozone air decontamination work?

The premises are treated using ozone misting. The decontamination machine is set up in the room after it has been cleared of occupants. Once turned on, the machine releases a mist of gas that settles on all surfaces (ceiling, walls, floor, machinery, and equipment) and also disinfects the ambient air.

Misting with oxidizing agents such as ozone has proven to be highly effective at eliminating microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, mold, etc.) and oxidizing chemical contaminants. Its gaseous state allows it to penetrate areas that liquid disinfectants cannot reach. However, this method requires the use of gas at very high concentrations and is subject to strict regulations set forth in the Labor Code and the Social Security Code due to the gas’s health hazards.

Limitations of Ozone Disinfection and Alternative Solutions

While ozone is a powerful decontaminant, its use has one major drawback: as soon as the misting stops, contamination resumes. This gas is also extremely toxic to living organisms, which means that staff or users must be evacuated during treatment—thereby interrupting activity in the affected areas. Finally, again due to its toxicity, all sensitive items must be removed from the room before misting begins.

So, which air purification solution should you choose? After years of research into the challenges of industrial disinfection, Photoclean has developed a revolutionary technology: sterilization by photolysis.

Methods for Disinfecting Air and Surfaces in Industrial Settings

Combining effectiveness, safety, and energy efficiency, the Photoclean decontamination solution harnesses the properties of UV-C rays, optimized by a proprietary medium of its own design. The principle: continuously treat the air in the room by exposing it to UV-C radiation for a sufficiently long period to ensure complete disinfection.

Industrial UV decontamination offers numerous advantages: continuous purification and
even in the presence of personnel and products, with no chemical emissions into the air; treatment of large volumes of air; elimination of dead zones; modules adaptable to existing air handling units; control of energy costs; and compact equipment design…
