Gray Room

Gray Room:
A cost-effective, custom solution
thanks to UV rays

Typically used for equipment storage or airlocks, the gray room serves as a transition area between an untreated (and therefore “dirty”) room and a cleanroom.

Although it does not have the same requirements as a cleanroom, its level of cleanliness must, of course, be strictly controlled to ensure complete safety.

Photoclean, a specialist in air treatment and UV disinfection, leverages its expertise to serve the industrial, food industry, pharmaceutical, and medical sectors, offering you a customized solution perfectly tailored to the challenges of your business.

Discover the benefits of our technology and how it can help you save money while maintaining the same level of effectiveness as a traditional system.

The Difference Between Cleanrooms and Gray Rooms: An Intermediate Level of Cleanliness

Gray rooms are storage, transfer, and maintenance areas that play a highly strategic role. They are used to transport equipment or products that will later be used in a cleanroom through an intermediate area with controlled contamination levels.

In a sense, these are rooms with intermediate cleanliness levels: they are not sterile, but the environment is sufficiently controlled to reduce the risk of contamination and thus limit the subsequent introduction of bacteria and microorganisms into the cleanroom.

Used for storage (including in cold storage), order fulfillment, and production, these areas are generally located in a place that poses a lower health risk. They are therefore ideal spaces for safely preparing materials.

Consequently, setting up this type of space requires specific air treatment and, like cleanrooms, control of humidity, temperature, and pressure to prevent conditions conducive to bacterial growth. As with cleanrooms, this generally involves air-handling systems that use, among other things, HEPA filters (high-efficiency particulate air filters) designed to trap inert particles (airborne dust) to which contaminants might adhere.

The Benefits of a Microbiological Cleanroom with Photoclean

As controlled-cleanliness rooms, gray rooms require air-handling systems that meet certain technical requirements.

While controlling temperature or humidity is generally not a problem, the same cannot be said for filtering inert particles. In fact, only HEPA-class filters (also known as absolute filters) are fine enough to trap even the smallest particles.

The problem? There are 1,000 inert particles for every 1 viable particle: filtering such a large amount of dust therefore requires a considerable amount of energy, which results in a very significant pressure drop. As a result, these filters are not compatible with all air handling units and require the use of large, expensive systems.

For this reason, Photoclean has developed a UV air decontamination system that will help you save money while improving the operational efficiency of your cleanroom.

UV Technology

Specifically, our system—which consists of modules combining UV lamps and a proprietary media we have patented—directly eliminates chemical and microbiological contaminants without filtering out inert particles. This eliminates the risk of microbial contamination, all with minimal pressure drop and energy consumption.

The number of air changes required per hour is thus 2 to 3 times lower, and the size of the system is significantly reduced.

Custom Solution

In fact, our UV decontamination system is available in a wide range of units that are custom-built in our workshops in the Rhône-Alpes region to meet your needs. These include standalone fixed modules that can be installed on the ceiling or in the attic, mobile monoblock modules designed for floor placement, universal modules compatible with all air handling units (AHUs), and terminal units that can also control temperature, humidity, air extraction, or even create positive or negative pressure in the room. We can also supply you with high-efficiency air handling units that incorporate our modules as standard features.

Comprehensive Audit

Photoclean conducts a comprehensive audit of the premises for each project through its in-house engineering department. This allows us to accurately identify the challenges you face and offer you a customized solution that will fully meet your needs, with little or no changes required to your environment. We also handle the follow-up. This gives you peace of mind!
