Simple Operation
The How an air handling unit works is simple: the unit draws air from the rooms, treats it, and then redistributes it through a network of ducts.
A dual-flow air handling unit can also recover heat from the exhaust air (its thermal energy) before extracting it and discharging it outdoors. The air handling unit helps ventilate the premises by renewing the air. To do this, it can either recirculate a portion of the indoor air and replace the exhausted volume with fresh air drawn from outside, or use only recirculated air, or conversely, only fresh air.
Low energy consumption
However, air handling units (AHUs) that use conventional technology do have certain drawbacks. In fact, if fresh air is introduced, since the outdoor temperature differs from the indoor temperature, the air must be heated or cooled using thermal energy recovered through the unit’s built-in heat exchangers. The problem is that if a microorganism is present in the exhaust air and passes through the heat exchanger, there is a risk of spreading it throughout the premises if the AHU’s recirculation function is used.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many companies are therefore choosing to shut down their heat recovery units, which often leads to excessive consumption of heating coils or an inability to maintain temperatures.
