HEPA filters: Effective Decontamination
The different types of filters are classified according to the MPPS (most penetrating particle size) rating, which is based on the size of the particles that are most difficult to capture (between 0.1 and 0.2 µm).
HEPA filters, which fall into the category of fine filters, have an efficiency rating of approximately 99.9%. While highly effective for air decontamination, they do have significant limitations.
To capture a single pollutant, HEPA filter must filter no fewer than 1,000 inert particles. The result is a high pressure drop, leading to energy-intensive—and therefore costly—operation and oversized systems. Furthermore, these systems are incompatible with air handling units (AHUs), which are not designed to handle such a demanding level of filtration.
What about filters for air handling units?
Of course, there are filters on the market that are compatible with air handling units but offer a lower level of filtration. However, their effectiveness is significantly lower than that of HEPA filters.
