Airborne Disinfection

Airborne Disinfection of Business Premises

To ensure the protection of users and the safety of products, air disinfection is an essential practice. There are various techniques, each with its own applications and limitations. Photoclean explains them in detail and presents its innovative method for air decontamination.

What are the technologies used for disinfecting overhead surfaces?

Health and safety requirements—which are particularly stringent in the medical and food industry sectors—require regular air decontamination and facility cleaning. Depending on the type of activity, the conditions within the facility, and the products involved, different techniques are used:

  • Fumigation, which involves introducing a gas that destroys microorganisms present on surfaces;
  • Misting or nebulization, which involves the high-pressure spraying of a disinfectant chemical in the form of microdroplets;
  • UV disinfection, which uses the properties of ultraviolet rays to eliminate microorganisms.

Uses and Limitations of Air Disinfection Techniques

Misting and fumigation can be used to treat surfaces in commercial, medical, or industrial facilities. However, both methods have limitations:

  • It is mandatory to evacuate personnel for the duration of the treatment.
  • The products used must then be removed before occupants return.
  • Once operations resume, contamination is possible again.
  • Over time, these techniques have a negative impact on the treated surfaces.

Furthermore, while fumigation and fogging are effective for disinfecting surfaces, they have no effect on the air once the treatment is complete.

What is the solution for effective and permanent industrial air decontamination?

Faced with the limitations of traditionally used technologies, Photoclean has developed a new method of airborne decontamination. This method uses UV-C light, as well as a medium that helps overcome the constraints associated with the use of these rays.

UV disinfection works through a chemical reaction called photolysis, which destroys any exposed microorganisms. The technique is effective against viruses, bacteria, yeasts, and molds… However, it requires a long exposure time for microbes to UV-C rays, which poses a problem in industrial applications.

Photoclean has therefore developed a proprietary filter medium, composed of silica fibers, which is designed to trap contaminants while allowing inert particles to pass through, and to provide an exchange surface area of 4,000 m² per square meter of material.

The Photoclean solution provides efficient, continuous treatment that is less aggressive and less expensive to operate. The air treatment units have a compact design, low energy consumption, and adaptability to all applications. Whether integrated into air handling units or operating independently, Photoclean units provide a customized solution for industrial facilities, even for treating very large volumes without the risk of dead zones. Finally, they are designed and manufactured in France and fully comply with current standards.
